Obama backs anti-Trump protests, says 'American values are at stake'

Former US President Barack Obama released a statement today Monday Jan. 30th supporting the protests going on around the country against Donald Trump's ban on travelers and refugees entering the US from 7 Muslim-majority countries.

The statement, issued by Obama’s spokesman, Kevin Lewis, is the first time that the former US president will weigh in on Trump’s presidency. Read the statement after the cut..

"President Obama is heartened by the level of engagement taking place in communities around the country. In his final official speech as President, he spoke about the important role of citizens and how all Americans have a responsibility to be the guardians of our democracy — not just during an election but every day.
Citizens exercising their Constitutional right to assemble, organize and have their voices heard by their elected officials is exactly what we expect to see when American values are at stake. With regard to comparisons to President Obama’s foreign policy decisions, as we’ve heard before, the President fundamentally disagrees with the notion of discriminating against individuals because of their faith."

Trump state visit plan 'very difficult' for Queen

Composite image of Donald Trump and the Queen

Theresa May's decision to invite Donald Trump to a state visit has put the Queen in a "very difficult position", a former head of the Foreign Office says.
In a letter to The Times, Lord Ricketts said the offer had been "premature".
A petition calling for the state visit to be cancelled has gathered more than 1.6 million signatures.
On Monday, thousands of people across the UK joined protests against Mr Trump's travel ban on seven mainly Muslim countries.
The controversial immigration measures prompted an emergency debate in parliament on Monday.
Lord Ricketts, who was permanent secretary at the Foreign Office from 2006 to 2010, said it was unprecedented for a US president to be invited for a state visit in their first year in the White House.
He questioned whether Mr Trump was "specially deserving of this exceptional honour".
"It would have been far wiser to wait to see what sort of president he would turn out to be before advising the Queen to invite him.
"Now the Queen is put in a very difficult position," he said.

Ms Yates, right, was appointed by Barack Obama and remained in an acting role
Donald Trump has fired the acting US attorney general after she questioned the legality of his immigration ban.
Sally Yates, who was appointed by Barack Obama, ordered justice department lawyers not to enforce the president's executive order.
A White House statement accused Ms Yates of "betraying" the justice department and being "weak on borders".
Mr Trump replaced her with Dana Boente, US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Mr Boente said he was "honoured to serve President Trump" and immediately directed his department to enforce the controversial order.
Mr Trump also replaced the acting director of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Daniel Ragsdale, who has been in the post since 20 January. He is the former deputy director.
No reason was given for Mr Ragsdale's sacking. He has been replaced by, Thomas Homan, the executive associate director of enforcement and removal.

Muslims pray in Dallas Airport to protest Donald Trump's ban of seven Muslim countries from entering the US

Muslims in the United States on Sunday took to the Dallas Fort Worth airport to protest Donald Trump’s executive order temporarily barring Muslims from seven countries from entering the United States. The protest was going on normally and then there was a loud call to prayer, following which a group of Muslim men converted the baggage claim area to their prayer ground.
Some were against this move by the Muslims, pointing out that no Muslim nation will allow Christians or Jews to take over their airport in this way. While a few others felt it was a necessary move as long as it was kept peaceful.
A day before, a similar, less peaceful protest was held to demand the release of detainees who were held in accordance with Trump's executive order. See video of the protest below...

Britain rejects calls to cancel Donald Trump’s state visit over his Muslim travel ban even after petition nears a million signatures

No.10 has rejected calls to cancel the state visit of U.S president Donald Trump due to his Muslim ban, even after an oline petition asking Britain to cancel his visit reached almost a million signatures.

Trump over the weekend signed into effect a controversial law stating that citizens of 7 countries including Iraq , Iran, Libya and Sudan be temporarily banned from entering the U.S for the next three months leading to criticism and reactions all over the world.
A petition saying his visit would “cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen” if he were to be welcomed in the U.K. has gotten to almost a million signatures in 24 hours, and could now be debated by MPs in Parliament.

But a spokesman of No.10 on Monday said the position had not changed, saying: “An invitation has been extended and accepted.”

The BBC also reported that Britain's rejection of Trump's visit  would be a “populist gesture”, adding that  the invitation had been accepted – and scrapping it would “undo everything”.

“America is a huge important ally. We have to think long term.”

Donald Trump's team told the U.K's Foreign Secretary that Brits who have shared nationality with the named countries covered by the restrictions -  Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen - would not be stopped from entering America but that they will face extra checks if they are traveling directly from one of the banned countries.

Labour MP, Jeremy Corbyn angry with Trump's new law, said U.K. Prime Minister TheresaMay should speak up against the ban and cancel the invitation or she would be be "failing the British people" if she doesn't .

Speaking to ITV's Peston On Sunday, Jeremy said: "Is it really right to endorse somebody who has used this awful misogynistic language throughout the election campaign, awful attacks on Muslims, and then of course this absurd idea of building a wall between themselves and their nearest neighbour?"

He added: "I think we should make it very clear we are extremely upset about it, and I think it would be totally wrong for him to be coming here while that situation is going on. I think he has to be challenged on this.
"I am not happy with him coming here until that ban is lifted, quite honestly.
"Look at what's happening with those countries, how many more is it going to be and what is going to be the long term effect of this on the rest of the world?"

Breaking News! Federal judge blocks Trump's immigration order from deporting people detained at airports

A federal judge in New York has issued an emergency stay temporarily stopping the removal of individuals detained at the airports after President Trump's order banned immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S.

The move marks  the first successful legal challenge against the Trump administration and affects those who have arrived in the U.S. already or were in transit with valid visas.

The court ruled on a habeas corpus petition filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on behalf of two Iraqi men who were detained at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday after Trump's ban. Since then both men, Hameed Khalid Darweesh and Sameer Abdulkhaleq Alshaw, have been granted entry into the U.S.
Cecillia Wang, deputy legal director at the ACLU, tweeted:
The ruling deals with a part of Trump's order which bars Syrian refugees indefinitely and halts the resettlement of all refugees for four months as the administration reviews the vetting process.
Judge Ann Donnelly of the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn granted the request from ACLU  to stay the deportations after determining that the risk of injury to those detained by being returned to their home countries necessitated the decision.

And only minutes after the judge’s ruling in New York, another came in Virginia when U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema issued a temporary restraining order to block the removal of any green-card holders being detained at Dulles International Airport for seven days.

Brinkema’s action also ordered that lawyers have access to those held there because of the president’s ban.

There have been several protests at various airports since the ban was announced.

Paris Jackson covers RollingStone Magazine | Talks about her Multiple Attempts at Suicide, Michael Jackson’s death being a murder & More

Paris Jackson is the cover star of RollingStone magazine, which happens to be her first magazine cover ever.
In her first-ever in-depth interview, Michael Jackson’s daughter discusses her father’s pain and finding peace after addiction and heartache.
Here’s what the 18-year-old daughter of the late legendary Michael Jackson had to share:
On her father’s death being a murder: “Absolutely. Because it’s obvious. All arrows point to that. It sounds like a total conspiracy theory and it sounds like bullshit, but all real fans and everybody in the family knows it. It was a setup. It was bullsh-t.”
On her multiple suicide attempts and self-harming: “It was just self-hatred, low self-esteem, thinking that I couldn’t do anything right, not thinking I was worthy of living anymore…It was just once that it became public.”
On questions over Michael being her biological father: “He is my father. He will always be my father. He never wasn’t, and he never will not be. People that knew him really well say they see him in me, that it’s almost scary…I consider myself black. [Michael] would look me in the eyes and he’d point his finger at me and he’d be like, ‘You’re black. Be proud of your roots.’ And I’d be like, ‘OK, he’s my dad, why would he lie to me?’ So I just believe what he told me. ‘Cause, to my knowledge, he’s never lied to me.”

Former Cosby star Keshia Knight Pulliam welcomed her first child, a baby girl named Ella Grace. The 37-year-old former child star shared her baby news on her Instagram page on Monday, Jan. 23.
“Ella Grace has arrived!” she wrote under a picture of her daughter’s feet in white baby booties.
The newborn’s father is Keshia’s ex-husband and former NFL player Ed Hartwell, who filed for divorce in July, just days after she announced her pregnancy. He bitterly demanded a paternity test to prove he was the father.
In November, Keshia wrote on Instagram.com:
“I am so eternally grateful for my little Ella. I would not trade any of what I have gone thru for her. She is my greatest accomplishment & joy. She has inspired my smile even thru the tears. I am so proud she has chosen me to be her mommy.”
Keshia and Ed tied the knot in 2016, just months after they began dating. Keshia reportedly met Ed through his ex-wife and her former friend Lisa Wu Hartwell. Keshia reportedly dated Hartwell while he was engaged to another woman.
Hartwell cited irreconcilable differences for the split, and demanded the paternity test as he was not convinced the unborn child was his. However, he missed the deadline for the test and Pulliam filed legal papers indicating she had submitted her DNA.

Teenager arrested after pupil stabbed to death outside London school

Tribute to Quamari Barnes
A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a boy of the same age was stabbed outside a north-west London school as his fellow students looked on.

Quamari Barnes was attacked while waiting at a bus stop at about 3.30pm on Monday, shortly after the end of the school day at Capital City academy. He was taken by ambulance to a central London hospital where he died.

According to a family friend he was threatened at a bus stop and his assailant chased him as he fled towards school for safety, but the motive for the attack is not yet known.

He is the second London teenager in four days to be fatally wounded in a knife attack. On Friday Djodjo Nsaka, 19, a student at Middlesex University, was found stabbed a few miles away near Wembley stadium.

Throughout Tuesday morning Capital City academy pupils emerged from the school to lay flowers and notes at the entrance gate, clutching each other tearfully or standing quietly together.

One note read: “Quamari was the most positive and energetic person I have ever met. He brought life into everyone’s lives. ‘When one door is closed you know another one is open’ – Bob Marley.”

On Twitter he was celebrated as a “bubbly, happy and also cheeky little boy”.

The school had initially been hopeful that he would pull through, informing parents later on Monday that he was expected to survive, but announcing on Tuesday that he had died.

“It is with overwhelming sadness that Capital City must confirm the sudden death of one of its students on Monday 23rd January,” it said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very sad time, and also with friends, fellow students and teachers.
